The first time I heard of AI in design, it was being hailed as the ‘next big thing in the industry’, just like every other AI announcement. And so, naturally, I was resistant to try it.

I saw other designers use it to create full design concepts in seconds and thought “Wow… that's cheating.”

I tried to stay away from the beckoning sorcery because I was convinced I was above it... But it was too strong of a spell.

I didn't want to have AI creating things for me, what's the fun in that? But I wasn't having any fun iterating on all the bad ideas I had to design and scrape either.

Just when I thought I was out… they pulled me back in.

I wanted my time back. Time to create faster and a little more organized. But I still doubted its capabilities to give me back something useful. Because let's be honest, we've all seen AI content before, and it's not always the most intuitive.

Nonetheless, despite my reluctance, I gave it a try.

To my amazement, it generated a sea of designs and ideas, and even asked questions I hadn't thought to ask yet.

As I'm scrolling through the output of my imagination on screen, at that moment, I realized that I wasn’t just using AI, I was confronting a deeper question that plagued me: “Will AI replace graphic designers? If it can do all this… then what am I doing here?”

Deep, I know.

But seriously,  if a computer can generate the work, what does it mean to be a designer in this age?

Many platforms built around creativity and authenticity, like Canva, Figma, and Adobe, have openly adopted AI. Now anyone can generate visuals in seconds. No design background required. Suddenly, the barrier to entry is much lower. People can make their own designs, instead of relying on experienced designers. That shift raises another uncomfortable question: Is this the downfall of designers… or the dawn of something new?

Other real questions started circulating too: what is art’s value? Our value, as designers? What counts as design?

AI invited many provoking questions, not only for me, but for all artists as well.

But what if all these questions lead us to discovering something more important about technology, even about ourselves?

New Methods to a New Madness

Designers' methodologies have been around forever. The job of a designer was less about generating ideas and more about producing them to see if they're viable in the first place.

Designers have been sifting through the internet from sites like Dribbble to Google Images for ages, looking for that design, you know, the one that sums up the spark of inspiration for a new project idea or big client.

I know I have.

In today's times, you can take all your fragmented concepts and scattered ideas, the mind of a typical creative, and dump it all into AI to organize, analyze, and even make you question your job security - all in one.

Throughout every branch of digital design, from UX to print, AI design tools have greatly impacted creative work - and the future of graphic design will never look the same.

And AI is simply the next step in the evolution.

So what truly matters?

When idea generation becomes effortless, what matters is how you use those ideas.

The designer role shifts from execution to judgement.

And this is what separates the expert designers from AI and the people merely typing prompts into the software. Designers can explore visual directions much faster with AI acting as the brainstorming tool, and then refining the designs with their own preferences.

I speak from experience when I say that my messy, raw creative energy gets nicely condensed into a package of organized data output. It has become a harmonious workflow of the limitless imagination of my mind paired with the power of my device.

With more speed, freedom and ease of use, it's an amazing time to be a creative!

From Handmade Design to Eye for Design

Now I'm not going to sit here and tell you that AI doesn't have its own set of drawbacks when it comes to design. We can't escape the common-sense issues that AI lacks the discernment for.

From what I gathered, AI pulls from the same datasets and algorithms, and there are two problems that arise with that.

The first is homogenization. Big word, my apologies.

In short, it means that as more designers generate ideas using the same AI design tools, the results start to look similar. It lacks much individuality and nuanced branding.

The second is ethical considerations. The sameness in designs can lead to biases that exclude certain users of a market.

That's where the designer’s unique eye for design comes in.

It takes the designer’s personal preferences that come from their lived human experience to notice the details that will make it more appealing and inclusive to others.

Balancing Creativity

When starting a new project design, I usually adopt a hybrid graphic design workflow.

With AI being at the helm of compiling rough drafts and making suggestions, the real artistry begins after: directing the vision behind it.

A good design is more than just generated elements. It's the nuance of visual language that people can pick up on easily by just a glance.

The output should never be the final product, but the inspiration that fosters it.

Creativity isn't stopped by AI, it just shifts its position in the designer's creative process. Taking back your time.

With tools such as Figma AI you can generate coded website layouts, design concepts, and automate repetitive tasks that would have taken hours - making it one of the most powerful AI tools for designers available right now.

Now designers can quickly borrow or discard elements on the fly and come up with new ideas at a much faster pace, increasing productivity of up to 35%.

The shift has already begun.

AI designing your next website or app isn't in the distant future, it's here, and designers are embedding it in their everyday workflows. Over 80% of designers now use AI tools in their creative process on a regular basis.

And the ones that don't are being left behind.

What would have been a couple hours of spare time could have been the difference between a designer with 4 clients versus a designer that is only able to book 2.

So, what are we doing here?

Well, designers are here to do what we were always here to do.

To create.

Designers are moreso now strategic thinkers, and more focused on the creative aspects that human creativity vs AI will never make obsolete.

It takes emotional intelligence & intuition as the designer uses their best judgment to make decisions on what's best for the user.

This is something that no prompt can replicate, and the clearest answer to the question of AI replacing creative jobs: the role shifts, it doesn’t vanish.

I guess the question changes from ‘What are we doing here?’ to ‘Where are we going together?’.

AI can only get us so far to the art we envisioned when first starting the project, but it's up to us to bring it together.

Technology Can’t Stop Creativity

AI won't replace designers. It can't.

What it can do is amplify our imagination and speed up our creative process.

And in the industry, expert designers have a great eye for what works and what doesn't, and this comes with years of design experience and human connection. Something inaccessible to a robot and limited by a person typing in prompts.

Our job is to adapt and embrace this new tool, and play the role as the creative curator and concept artist. Designers that do this will thrive in this new landscape.

We are in the era where AI-driven design solutions and your imagination have never been closer. Design has always been defined by the intention of the artist and the choices they make about what deserves to exist.

Now's the time for the artists and doers to elevate their art and the way they present their creations to the world.
